PACQUIAO VS. MOSLEY: THE MOST EXCITING FIGHT THAT MAY NEVER HAPPEN

While all the recent talk among boxing fans and pundits is centered on Manny Pacquiao’s potential clash with Floyd Mayweather, the bout that might bring more excitement and has a better chance of living up to the hype is a fight with Sugar Shane Mosley instead. A year ago, a matchup between these two fighters would have been considered a mismatch, but that notion no longer holds true after Manny Pacquiao’s dominant victories over Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, proving that he is indeed a force to be reckoned with in both the Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight divisions.

No doubt Shane Mosley has a significant size advantage over Pacquiao, but the Pound-for-Pound King has proven in recent fights that it’s an obstacle he can overcome.  Mosley might have the advantage in strength in his upper body, but Pacquiao’s tree-trunk legs are the main reason he has been able to keep his power and explosiveness as he ascended through the higher weight classes.  You also can’t overlook the fact that Pacquiao might have the Phil Jackson of the sport in his corner in Freddie Roach.

The mix of their styles is definitely more conducive in bringing an action-packed fight and there will be no shortage of drama either. How will Pacquiao do against a more physical and faster version of Miguel Cotto? How will Shane’s granite chin hold up from Pacquiao’s flurry of punches from all angles? A win over the other also provides the victor more leverage in future negotiations with Mayweather.

Shane arguably deserves the fight with Pacquiao more than Mayweather. He’s a champion and definitely in the list when discussing this generation’s best fighters. Some, including Mayweather, may disagree, bringing up Mosley’s lopsided defeats in the past, but who has he really lost too? His losses have come from fighters that even Mayweather would have found difficult to defeat.  He lost twice to Vernon Forrest, who in his younger days and before the shoulder surgeries was as difficult a fight as Paul Williams. He also lost twice to Winky Wright, a great technician and defensive whiz that has fought as high as the Light Heavyweight division. No doubt that Mayweather has paid his dues and has fought tough opponents, but the difference is that Mosley has done that from the very beginning of his career until now, taking more and more risk with each fight.

For many Pacquiao fans, a fight with Mayweather might be more attractive since the latter is undefeated and was considered the pound-for-pound king before retiring, but I argue that a win over Mosley will provide Pacquiao the same recognition. Afterwards, Pacquiao can retire or fight Yuri Foreman for an 8th divisional championship, leaving Mayweather’s legacy in limbo.

Mayweather may disagree because Mosley has taken steroids. Most people forget that Mosley cheated just like Margarito. Your article is a joke. You and I know that there would be a public outcry and fans would proclaim that Mayweather was afraid of Pacquiao if the fight doesn’t happen immediately. Mosley should focus on Berto. The winner of that fight should get a chance at the winner Mayweather- Pacquiao so that the welterweight divison can have it’s first undisputed champion since Zab Judah.

  2. Reno Says:

I agree 100% with this article, but I would rather Mayweather fight Mosely in order to deter the many doubters that he have garnered over the years. If Mayweather beats Pacquaio, then there will still be doubters claiming Pacquaio was never a welterweight to begin with. But unfortunately the huge money fight is Mayweather v Pacquiao, maybe the winner will fight the winner of Berto v Mosely.

  3. benito Says:

Excellent article. I agree that this would make for a better fight. The one reason Mayweather-Pacquiao is more attractive at this point in time is the personality clash and the dramatics involved in that fight. But action-wise, I agree that thos would live up to the hype more. Shane Mosley is one hell of a fighter too—just wish he caught both Pacman and Money earlier in his career. I am a pac-fan and I think if Mayweather begins his diva act, Pacman should take on Mosley instead and then, as you assessed, Yuri Foreman and leave Mayweather’s P4 claim forever in question.

  5. HankM Says:

i think it’s the other way around. mayweather ought to fight mosley to prove he’s worthy of fighting pacquiao. mosley lost to cotto, which pacquiao defeated in a thundering performance.

everyone knows mayweather has ducked several great welterweight fighters, cotto, mosley and margarito included. so his zero loss record is not as impressive as to fighters who have losses but have taken the risk and had the courage to fight equal opponents.

  6. deepwater Says:

I rather see pac man vs mosley every night of the week.Shane is a hall of famer who is the current linear welterweight champ, floyd is not. floyd looked good in beating lil jaun marquez but pac man looked like a lil monster destroying the strong cotto. pass on fraud. the people want mosley vs pac!

  7. Jhulz Says:

i think that would be really a very good fight…i hope it will happen.

  8. Chamaco Says:

I rather see this fight than paquiao vs Mayweather, Mosley has a bigger heart and we know he is not going to run all night. Besides he definitely deserves this fight

  9. Jiddu Dali Says:

Why didnt you mention Mosley’s steroid use? This sounds like an article wishing to stuff Mosley is Mayweather’s shoes.

The fact that you think a win over 38 year old Mosley & Yuri Foremen is more valuable than a Mayweather fights evaporates all of your credibility. How about being objective…

In the testimony, recorded on Dec. 11, 2003, at the federal courthouse in San Francisco, Mosley also said that BALCO founder Victor Conte explained in detail how the drug was used and what its effects would be, including the potential harmful effects of the highly-regulated endurance booster. Mosley has admitted publicly and under oath that he used steroids and EPO, but has denied knowing that the drugs were banned or illegal.

When asked if he had gotten EPO from Conte, Mosley replied: “Yes, the hematocrit.”

“And that’s something you actually inject into yourself?” he was asked by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Nedrow.

“I think it’s right by your stomach, yes,” Mosley said, indicating where the drug is often injected.

  10. boxer Says:

We have a number of your so called player hater.
And as you mentioned because of jealousy, ego and the shock of how can that be that he is so good and so popular than me.
here are a few people who predicted a Cotto win hoping that Pacman fails more than they think Cotto is really the superior fighter.
    1. Dela Hoya - pretty much still in denial how badly he got beat and really hoping that Pacman got demolished. Not a chance.
    2. Hatton - picked Cotto as well. very sour grapes
    3. Mosley - picked Cotto hoping that Pacman won’t get 7 belts in 7 divisions.
    4. Angelo Dundee - just being a miserable old man. Just can’t accept how wrong he was with Oscar.
    5. Malignaggi - well, I don’t know why he call himself a boxer. He slaps more than he punch.
I never heard of a gay boxer but if there is one it is Malignaggi.
There are more people but too many to mention.
Bottom line, these people wanted Pacman to fail out of jealousy.
From Oscar being a 6 division champion not wanting to get surpassed by Manny to Hatton who got embarrassed and just putting all his energy wishing Manny fail.
Jealousy is what drives these people to bet against the Pacman.
The best thing is that Pacman just smile and enjoy his victories.

  11. Joey Kormier Says:

Definitely the best REAL fight out there but it won’t happen … PacMan fights Mayweather, gets his 35 million then retires …

  12. kingof bombs Says:

I have wanted to see this fight since earlier this year when shane was lobbying hard to fight pacquiao. If a fight between the two were to materialize it would definitely be a good one. I also would like to see shane have a rematch with cotto or fight paul williams.

  13. ricky alipio Says:

If Mayweather don’t want to fight Pacquiao with a 50/50 deal the only reason is he really dont want to be in the ring with the pound 4 pound king, thats a period. I agree Mosley really deserves a match with Pacman. Who cares about Mayweather.

  14. Zab Judah Says:

this is what I have been saying all along.

mayweather-pacquiao might be a poison pill due to mayweathers boring style. he will run from pacquiao for 12 rounds, and the 3 million who end up watching will see a boring mayweather track meet.

pacquiao-mosely should be a barn burner, even more than the pacquiao-cotto fight.

this idea that mosely cant sell ppv is rubbish. make a 24/7 episode, and show the people mosely demolished and interest will come back fast.

maybe 1.5 - 2 million will watch this, less than the 3 million pacquiao-mayweather did. but those that see it will see a real spectacle , and will leave hungry for new pacquiao fights.

  15. Tapsilog Says:

Mayweather first very exciting fight event year 2010 after that Shane Mosley…next…AGREE
    Thank You

  16. Snapdown Says:

i think its a good fight too than mayweather. Coz mayweather is has too many reason to escape away to fight pacquiao.

  17. Pac you May Says:

Let’s put some fire on it.. Put on Mosley and it should be the most exciting fight ever.. Never mind that loud mouth boring Mayweather.

  18. davepinoy Says:

A more difficult fight than Mayweather but for discerning fans and analyst..a much more important bout for the legacy of both fighters.

Gayweather’s skill and excitement had already swinged downwards and has not been in any world class fight. His come back fight with Marquez was a Marketing Hype which the boxing fans almost abandoned needing an extra push from HBO, GBP and sponsors. Insiders know its the latinos who bought the fight not Gayweather.

  19. Bay Area Says:

my thoughts are the same. Pacman should fight mosley first! then Floyd second.

  20. Jim Says:

Pacman-Mayweather jr fight will be exciting to watch. For sure the best fighter will prevail not just trash talking. Thank You!

  21. Victor Manuel Nola Says:

i was expecting shane to hassle pacquiao, too after the cotto bout….never happened.

  22. nicholsjet Says:

Why not Mayweather vs Shane Mosley first? The winner takes Pacquiao. Pacquiao has already dispatched Cotto.

  23. Jay Ari Yin Says:

After Pacquiao demolishes Mayweather, he will fight Mosley for the undisputed welterweight championship.

  24. entradero Says:

JMM/Shane then Yuri for eight then maybe if it warrants it, fight Miguel again. Forget Floyd, he does not deserve to be in the same space as Manny .

  25. Shooting Star Says:

I think PBF is indeed ducking. A fight with Mosley is fine but to challenge Yuri Foreman for an 8th Division title is better.

  26. Eddie Says:

i agree, Shane vs. Manny = action !!
Manny vs. Floyd = running and chasing game.
    * Floyd will run as he has NO Power to K.O. or hurt the PACMAN.

  27. Don Says:

You are forgetting that Mosley lost to Cotto in 2007. By defeating Cotto, Pacquiao has already won over Mosley’s conqueror so what’s the point of fighting the latter?

However I agree that Mosley is better contender for Pacquiao than Mayweather. Mayweather is like a snake-oil salesman. Wrote about him here:

    http://www.boxingfrenzy.com/2009/11/mayweather-and-the-myth-of-the-40-0-greatness/

  28. Albert Says:

I think he should fight Yuri first before Yuri loses his belt to another. Mosley is not available soon anyways. Mayweather is scared to face Pacquiao or any top notch fighter.

  29. John Agagon Says:

If Pacman will not retire after Mayweather, he should fight Foreman instead of Mosley. He has more chance to win an get the 8th weight division belt.

  30. Ely Says:

Absolutely makes sense. Always felt that Mayweather needs to earn a shot at Pacquiao. That he needs to man up to the likes of Cotto and Mosley, beat either fighter, then, having earned it, gets to face Pacquiao.

Pacquiao-Mosley makes sense. As does Cotto-Mayweather. Financially, it’s a risk, ’cause one or both may end up losing…but darn it. It’s a risk worth taking. Mayweather would probably piss in his trunks having to be up there with Cotto, whom he has avoided all this time, but heck he hasn’t earned the right to face Manny yet. Cotto will give Floyd a nice beatdown and he’ll be exposed for what he really is. Mayweather isn’t as good as self-advertised.

Pacquiao doesn’t need to earn a shot at Mayweather. Fighting Mosley would be an unnecessary risk for Manny, but he’ll fight him. Manny fights all comers.

  31. Eddie Says:

If the Pacquiao vs.Mayweather fight does push through. I think Mosley should take on the winner. He deserves a shot at it. So, we can all look forward to seeing a Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight sometime before the end of 2010.

  32. davepinoyisgay Says:

    pac will loose to mayweather

  33. erickpagaduan Says:

    cotto defeated mosley

and cotto was defeated by pacquiao

    does it make sense?

  34. LAKESHA Says:

i think sugar shane would kill manny. but also shane mosley has a fighter at welterweight who is 4-0 and we wanna see nyjohn anderson fight.he fights justlike shane but if shane isnt fighting we wanna see our boy fight. STOP BEING SELFISH AND HELP OTHERS OUT.

  35. Stonecold Says:

Yeah, if this fight between Pacman and Mosley will happen., it will be an easy fight for Pacman.. Pacman will knocked Mosley’s ass cold!! Just look how Pacman dominated Cotto. Think of it that Mosley lost to Cotto.. What else Manny can prove? Mosley is eagerly wants Pacman into a fight to earn more money in his bank. I don’t see any exciting fight if this will happen… Manny wants Mayweather ass so this fuck**g NIGER will shutup his mouth!!

  36. ernie marcelo Says:

as a tune up fight, pacman should take on yuri. it’s another feather to his cap if he beats him and I know it’s going be just a walk in the park for the pacman.

  37. WeaponOfMassDestruction Says:

    *

Forget Fraud Mayweather! Pacquiao’s legacy is already set without Fraud. If Pacquiao captures his 8th title, that would cement his place in the top 5 or even top 3 of the greatest fighters in history.
Fraud will be nowhere. His biggest and most memorable fight will be against the overrated journeyman fighter, Hatton, and losing on one scorecard against the over the hill Oscar. Which Pacquiao totally demolished in a shut out stoppage.

I hope Fraud/Pacquiao never happens. Manny does not need it. Pacquiao has got enough investments and money.

Fraud should jump up and down if Manny offers him 40% of the split.

MANNY IS GLOBAL. Fraud is regional.

  38. Alan Jenkins Says:

I agree wholeheartedly with everything said. I’d also like to add that I think Mosley deserves to fight the Pacman more than Floyd,Jr. He’s been in the game longer, has never ducked anybody, has only been off his feet in a fight once in his long career and has never been knocked out. He deserves a big payday so he can retire in financial comfort. If a fight with Floyd, Jr. is in the cards, make him wait his turn. A Pacquiao-Mosley fight would be much more interesting with definitely more action than a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight which could end with a decision after 12 boring rounds due to Floyd’s fighting style. If the Pacman can get by Mosley, then his negotiating position with the Mayweather camp would be greatly enhanced, so bring on Sugar Shane!

  39. Uvor Says:

The fight with Mosley is most exciting than watching fight with Talkative Mayeather, both fighters are known for ingagement toe to toe than with Mayweather coward style un-fair fighter…..

  40. manug_bulang! Says:

true! much more exciting than a mayweather fight. but then mosley is scheduled to fight against berto. if he get past berto, and pacman escapes mayweather then i think it would be a good one. mosley will have 2 welter belts by then and pacman has 1. a unified title bout would be very marketable to the public and would boost ppv buys. hows that?

  41. francis Says:

i totally agree!!! i have been blogging that the Mayweather fight will only be about money. Legacy-wise, Pac-Shane is more appropriate.
Well, well said -”…live Mayweather’s legacy in limbo.”

Floyd does not deserve a dignified fight like what Pacman can provide if the former wins(or even if he loses). Floyd himslef said so that legacy cant feed his kid.

  42. jomans Says:

    go for 8th title..scrap mayweather,the man is a joke.!!solidy your legacy..goodluck

  43. greg page Says:

if and when Manny fights Shane, there must be no more future fight with Floyd.. If Manny eventually trashes Shane, he must not entertain Floyd afterward.. The bottom line is, Shane and Floyd must mix it up, and the winner to face Manny in a “winner take all super fight”.. otherwise, what is Manny’s ranking as the No.1 welterweight for?…

  44. durianct Says:

a fight with Mosley would definitely be a very interesting one before Pacman fights Mayweather. Maybe June of 2010 is possible and november of December 2010 for a Mayweather encounter. Or as some suggest, yuri foreman for a possible 8th title bout and 8 divison belt for pacquiao. just a wishful thinking!

  45. Phil guy Says:

yeah Mosley deserves a fight with pac, though i want to see Pac silence Floyd. Mosley is a great welter and a future hall of fame, he never duck any fighter and took the risk in every fight. If Pac-Floyd will not materialize i would say Pac will fight Mosley for unification then Yuri Foreman for 8th title. Pac has only 2 fight left in his carrier. In the end Floyd wont have a dance partner, without Pac, Floyd will be counting coins not Benjamins.

  46. perry ayos Says:

For more excitement, Yes I 100% agree. But for the tons of money, the ultimate fame, the global demand and to zip somebody’s big mouth, It is absolutely a fight with Mayweather.

  47. perry Says:

After Floyd by TKO, I would like to see the Pacman takes on Yuri Foreman for an insanely unprecedented 8th world title in 8th division, then Mosley as his retirement fight.

  48. isidro Says:

One big money and for the p4p glory…
I have a doubt it might not happen too.

  49. leonthegee Says:

ya he can yuri foreman drop down to 150 cuz thats all that bitch does is drain fighters and beat them. And New Catchweight Champion of the World Manny “the bitch” Pacquiao.

  50. Jarod Says:

    Completely disagree.

There is nothing more exciting in boxing then the two best boxers in the sport going at it.

Manny vs. Floyd offers a fight on the highest level possible, and Mosley is just not at that level. Neither in skill or recognition.

    Sorry.

  51. XusrGodPshr Says:

I wish the Pac/Gayweather fight does NOT happen! Gayweather needs the Pacman fight to support his arrogant lavish lifestyle. It’s all about him and money. Whereas Mosley is a true warrior yet humble and a generous person. I’d rather see him get all the riches a fight with Pacman can bring. I’d like to see Gayweather lose it all and start from scratch. That’ll probably end him or make the bitch a better person. Mosley/Pacquiao is the fight I’d rather see and win or lose for Manny is all good, but a loss to Mayweather will be hard to swallow. Pacman doesn’t need the gayweather fight to prove anything LOL! It’s the other way around. Team Pacquiao shouldn’t take the fight and wait for the outcome of Mosley/Berto. Happy Thanksgiving!

  52. williamu137 Says:

mosley is too flat footed and if cotto outboxed shane then everyone knows floyd would beat him by footwork and outthinking him. pacquiao like mayweather has better footwork and freddie roach would not allow mosley to get going. mosley is a great hall of famer but if you watch the 2nd oscar fight closely then you would know he lost. he does have a great puncher’s chance but floyd and manny are once in a generation type boxers. floyd did win the wbc, ibf, and was ring ww champion. pacquiao 7 time champion and only fighter to win in 7 weight classes=enough said. floyd- undefeated 6 time champion in 5 weight classes, olympic medalist, and world champion for 10 straight years=enough said. sorry shane but sit down and enjoy the fight of the century.mayweather was p4p#1 for 4 and a half years and manny is now. again- sorry shane

  53. lucky Says:

you just read what’s in my mind.. very well said man.. i like your article.. that’s what im telling yall.. manny dont need mayweather.. manny can attract crowds withou gayweather.. and leaving gayweather’s career in a lame track..

  54. gladiator Says:

for me the winner in mosley vs berto fight for unified belts of WBC and WBA is more challenging and more historic fight for the pacman, the winner gets the pacman for the unification of WBO,WBC & WBA…unlike mayweather had nothing to offer other then his ego and trashtalk..he must must fight the champion in IBF category..mayweather must win in passion, then pacman must win also for them to compete for the undisputed welterweight championship and the truly best an all time best pound for pound the best in this era..after pacman finishes mayweather..then its up to pacman to retire or to choose one more historical feat by challengig yuri foreman for WBA junior middleweight..

  55. jake joson Says:

mayweather is definitely going to stink up the place…but pacquiao got that ability to catch up to even the most elusive boxers

    http://sportzhype16.blogspot.com/2009/11/dont-underestimate-pacquiaos-ring-iq.html

  56. Richard Green Says:

We will be expecting that to happen - Manny fighting against Mosley… Mayweather is really scared with Manny…

  57. iloveboxing Says:

If only Shane woulda played his cards right by fighting this december instead of Jan. 30, 2010, maybe just maybe he coulda pushed for either a Mayweather fight or a Pac fight if pac vs. may aint made. But i think he lacks support from GBP in getting pushed for a big fight. If GBP really wanted, im pretty sure they coulda made a fight with him and Hatton instead of Berto and it would prolly more of a popular fight.

  58. tyrone Says:

mayweather should have fort berto and mosley fight pacquiao and the winners meet the losers fight each other also these promoters dont know what the hell they are doing

  59. henry Says:

thats a great!! but manny wants to fight mayweather before hatton and cotto!! if mayweather dont want to fight manny, shane the best deal!!

  60. Endura Says:

The problem here, no matter where you look at it, is Floyd’s inability to accept a challenging fight. We all know that the only reason Mayweather will fight Pac is for the money and not for the crown. He would not fight Mosley before and he would not fight him now. Of course his excuse is that Sugar is not a draw and he’s got 5 losses but we all know that he’s just scare to get his first loss. I tell you what though, the Floyd-Pac will not happen just for the same reason.

  61. killbill Says:

I can agree with this article. Mosley losses have come to great fighters at a higher weight class. Back then there was no drama in the welterweight division so Mosley went up in weight for the bigger purses. But you look at Mosley’s attributes: fast, granite chin, possesses knockout power at those smaller weight classes, and is considered by many the best light weight next to Roberto Duran. A fight with the Pacman would be a recipe for an explosive fight. Speaking of recipes, my mouth is getting watery just the thought of that fight happening!

  62. killbill Says:

Mosley is no doubt a boxing hall of famer, but I’ve seen one too many times how fighter get old overnight. I hope that isn’t the case with Mosley. However, if the same Mosley that dominated Margarito shows up to fight in these future bouts, he will be a force to deal with against any opponent, including Manny.

  63. Shane Mosley Says:

Great post. I gained some very valuable information from it. I’ve been trying out some new Asian recipes lately and am having a great time experimenting with them. Do you have a favorite cookbook? If you’d like to see my blog it’s here. Thanks again for this blog - it is really educational.
