After three epic battles, each one taking place within the same calendar year and contending with one another for “Fight of the Year” honors, WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez and former champion Rafael Marquez are set to announce a fourth showdown. Steve Kim recently reported that the bout will most likely be set for February 27, 2010 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Sources tell us that details have been finalized and the matchup is a done deal.
The third fight, which many assumed to be the last of a great trilogy, saw both men go toe-to-toe for twelve hard-fought rounds, with Vazquez coming out on top thanks to a twelfth round in which he was the fresher of the two men and was able to score a knockdown. The scores were close and Marquez’s team called the knockdown controversial and immediately asked for a fourth bout. Unfortunately, or fortunately considering how grueling the fights were, three reconstructive eye surgeries kept Vazquez out of the ring for almost eighteen months. In his first fight back, against journeyman Angel Priolo in the 126-pound division, Vazquez looked sluggish throughout the first nine rounds, showing only flashes of brilliance before scoring the technical knockout victory.
There are many, including myself, that feel Vazquez and Marquez should not be engaging in a fourth fight. They’ve already given all they can to the sport and I feel that both men could lose something that they might never get back, if that hasn’t already happened. Apparently, the fighters disagree as both are now set to face off again and will likely make more money fighting themselves than fighting anyone else. Although Marquez originally wanted the fight to take place in December, Vazquez preferred more time in order to drop down in weight.
