For all of Pacquiao’s accomplishments and accolades, he still has not gotten all the credit that he deserves. Some question the validity of his recent wins over De La Hoya and Hatton. Others criticize him for not facing some of the best fighters in the lower weight classes. Some question his boxing skills. Others bash him for fighting opponents at a catchweight, bestowing him the title of “Catchweight King.” But are any of these truly valid criticisms? Just how great is Manny Pacquiao?
Pacquiao is the only boxer to ever start at flyweight and fight his way up through the welterweight division. A number of people downplay this accomplishment by mentioning the fact that Pacquiao began his professional career at a very young however, however, similar to baseball, many boxers in other countries began at a young age, but the fact remains that Pacquiao is the only one to ever accomplish such a feat. Let’s analyze his career and the quality of his past opponents, as at almost every division he’s been in, he’s consistently faced quality opponents.
From flyweight through super bantamweight, he fought the likes of Chatchai Sasakul, Nedal Hussein, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba and Medgoen Singsurat. Although these fighters were not household names, they were considered to be some of the top fighters in their division when Pacquiao fought them. At featherweight and super featherweight, he faced Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, Jorge Solis and Oscar Larios. With the exception of Solis, the fighters I just mentioned are all multi-divisional champions and potential future Hall of Famers. I have heard critics mention that Pacquiao skipped bantamweight, ducking champions Tim Austin and Rafael Marquez. Are you serious? Pacquiao would have gladly faced those fighters if given the chance.
The fact of the matter is for so many years, promoters here in the U.S. felt that there was no market for Filipino fighters. That opinion wasn’t due to a lack of Filipino talent as Luisito Espinosa and Gerry Penalosa were also champions in the 90’s. Even though Pacquiao was already a proven fighter and a champion at flyweight, he could not convince anybody in the U.S. to promote and train him. In fact, he would probably still be a relatively unknown fighter in the Philippines if world-class trainer Freddie Roach did not take a chance to agree to train him. Pacquiao has never ducked anybody. Why would he have ducked Marquez and Austin when fighting those two fighters would have given him his highest payday at the time and provided him the exposure that he needed in the U.S. That is why, on two weeks noticed, he took the fight against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba in the first place. Although Ledwaba was a solid champion, we all know what happened in that fight.
Since then, Manny Pacquiao has done nothing but surpassed all expectations. He has become one of the few fighters in history who can retire without any regrets. Unfortunately, when you’re on top, there’s no shortage of critics. Just ask Floyd Mayweather. When Pacquiao defeated Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton convincingly, many people downplayed the victories. Oscar was said to be weight-drained and past his prime. Ricky Hatton was overrated and no longer an elite fighter. Of course, many of these critics were the same ones who picked Hatton and De La Hoya to defeat Pacquiao in the first place. Some critics who picked De La Hoya already considered him to be past his prime, having not fought at 147 for so many years, and yet, they still assumed that Pacquiao did not have enough boxing skills to pull it off. Furhtermore, when Pacquiao fought Ricky Hatton, the latter’s only loss was against Mayweather at a higher weight class. At jr. welterweight, however, Hatton was undefeated. Again, many expected Hatton to be too big and too strong, but again, Pacquiao proved them wrong.
Now Pacquiao is fighting Miguel Cotto, who arguably might be the best welterweight in the world, as he looks to continue to surprise many boxing experts. Fans expect fighters to face the toughest challenges while providing great excitement and Pacquiao has given us that time and time again throughout his career. What would your reaction have been a couple of years ago if someone had suggested the possibility of a fight between Pacquiao and the likes of Cotto, Mayweather and Mosley? Most of you would have probably thought of the idea as being ridiculous, thinking Pacquiao had no chance to beat any of those three mentioned. Because of Pacquiao’s determination and unmatched work ethic, he has made those matches possible and a number of people will no longer consider him to be an underdog against any of those fighters.
Lately, Pacquiao has also faced criticisms for facing fighters at catchweights. First of all, the fight against Cotto is his first catchweight fight and at 145, it’s a fair weight for both boxers. Pacquiao fought at 147 at Oscar’s insistence. He fought Ricky Hatton in his own division of 140, where the Brit had dominated for so many years. I can understand the people who say that the fight against Cotto should not be a title fight since it is not being fought at 147, but technicallym a welterweight fight can take place anywhere between 141-147. But where were all the criticisms about catchweights when Hopkins fought Pavlik or when Felix Trinidad fought Roy Jones? People are acting as if Pacquiao invented catchweights and that’s simply not the case. Many memorable fights in the pat were fought at catchweights. Julio Cesar Chavez fought Meldrick Taylor for the welterweight title at 145 pounds. Sugar Ray Leonard fought Thomas Hearns as a super middleweight at 163 pounds. He also forced Danny LaLonde to come down from 175 to 168 to fight for his light heavyweight title and the new super middleweight title.
It is time to appreciate Manny Pacquiao because a fighter like him only comes once in a generation. Sure, he’s not the greatest technical boxer and he may have some flaws, but those vulnerabilities combined with his ferociousness in the ring is what endears him to many boxing fans. Pacquiao has come a long way from being a one-dimensional fighter. He is now a much more complete boxer, while still being a warrior in his heart. Without question, he is truly an all-time great.

Amen!
Mosley, Cotto, Mayweather, etc. fight to win as with all fighters. What sets Manny apart from them is that he fight to entertain! It doesnt matter to him whatever the outcome of the fight may be, as long as we’re happy watching the fight!
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Alright, this article is nonsense. First of all NOBODY downs Pacquiao! Anybody who truly follows the sport knows he’s a great fighter and perhaps will be one of the all time greats when its all said and done. Boxers and fans respect Pacquiao and his accomplishments with no doubt. The fact is that there are a LOT OF FANS of Pacquiao because of his name and the fame he has brought to his country. There has been a incredible hype because of it. In all forums thats all you see. People who are not even followers of the sport just supporting him because he’s a people person inside and outside the ring. Has he done great things inside the ring? Yes! Has he gotten lucky inside the ring with some questionable desicions? YES! But that goes with lots of great fighter and great fights! its the nature of boxing! Besides all fighters will get criticized for something but that doesnt take away their merits!
No one questions Manny’s eagerness to fight, his determination and his skills. But in my country, every Christmas they roast a pig and its a tradition. So there’s a saying that “to every pig, there is a Christmas for them” First of all I AM NOT CALLING MANNY A PIG by ANY MEANS, but the phrase simply implies that everybody has a threshold, everybody has limits, everybody will face a fighter that will conquer them, for whatever reason….and I think, Christmas will come a little early for Pacquiao on NOv 14. Cotto will win, but Manny will still be great.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:47 AM
the “Catchweight King” title is just bogus… spewed by people who don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
the Cotto fight will be Pac’s first catchweight fight
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:48 AM
well said Mr. Oliver…couldn’t have done it better!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:08 AM
i couldn’t have said things better. this is one of the best boxing articles i’ve ever read. keep it up!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Pacquiao is still learning and growing in the field of Boxing. Considering his achievement in the present, we don’t know how far he will reach his potential. He will surpass all the legendary boxers.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:25 AM
I agree. Manny P. is an all time great and if he is able to pull off the win against Cotto, I can start to consider him to be in the 10 greatest of all time. Manny has worked hard and earned everything he has accomplished till now.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:31 AM
well said mate… well said
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 AM
Great article. Pacquiao will go down as an all-time great. He’s fighting for the seventh world title in as many divisions. That is unprecedented, as it is historic. And though I picked him to lose that fight, it will be the biggest feat accomplished in this era of boxing if he were to be victorious. He should be appreciated more, because we will most likely never witness anything like him again. Keep up the good work! God bless.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:04 PM
nice article mr. suarez! just to add on pac-odlh, pac never made the 147 max weight. i think he just weight 142
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:48 PM
Ok the best thing you can say about Manny Pacquiao is that he was a great or one of the greatest featherweight or lightweight of our time. I think that is a correct statement. I think is a correct statement to say that he is one of the greatest fighter period. The problem with Manny’s image is that they started to chase money. There is nothing wrong with that, but his image is suffering some for some of the cherry picking that they are doing. Limited fighter in Diaz I still see this as a big accomplishement. I picked Oscar to beat Manny, but them a mummy showed up to the ring. So that was Oscar’s fault for taking a fight at a weight that he could not do. Hatton was, is and will always be garbage. That was a great job of Cherry picking (Mayweather does the same), but I think they did a mistake when they picked Cotto as a cherry. I’m not talking bad about Cotto, but they picked him when he was at a weak stage of his career. He was beat by Margarito (????), beat a weak Jennings and almost lost to Clottey in his last fight. Cotto look slow for the Clottey fight, had a bad cut that prevented him from seing punches coming and I think he even got tired. They saw all those things and said we can beat that guy who is going down hill and still has a good name. The problem is that it sounds like Cotto pulled his head out of his ass and is training harder than ever. He started training camp earlier than usual and he looks like he was in weight before the actual training camp started. Manny is playing around too much with politics, movies, singing, typhoons, moving, and tv shows during his training camp. I dont really think he is taking this guy serious. This is why I pick Cotto to win this fight, but on the same note I still think of Manny as one of the greatest fighters. Just not at this weight.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:55 PM
very well said. i admire reporters like you. keep it up and more articles in the future
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:19 PM
Is this a story or news or just another fan wanting to show his ultra appreciation for his idol? Come on man we don’t need anyone telling us to “appreciate” him while we got him. People could have easily said the same thing about Oscar De La Hoya in terms of the number of titles in different weight divisions not to mention Floyd. Give us a break with the school girl crush stuff!
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:38 PM
NO Question. Pacquaio is an All Time Great!
After the Cotto fight, the next question should be “Is Pacquaio the GOAT(GREATEST OF ALL TIME)!
Now, that’s the question…
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:59 PM
You should have stopped at Barrera, Morales and Marquez. Defeating these 3 is more than enough to be considered an all time great. mentioning his other victories is not warranted, they are only icing for the cake.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:03 PM
It all comes down to jealousy & envy of Pac. If you were for pac through out his career then you would know the early ko’s in his career was due to a lucky one punch. The only real fighter to beat him was Morales and pac revenge that twice. If you were against pac you would have picked Diaz, Dela Hoya & Hatton to beat Pac. Then had excuses when they lost all 19 rounds. WHY DID YOU PICK AGAINST PAC AGAIN? CAUSE THERE TO BIG TO STRONG & PAC HAS NO SKILLS!! Why then these same people are outrage now that Pac is favored. Maybe the experts are finally fed up always being wrong 3X in a row? Only the true haters and Jealous ones are left. Same reasons they are using that Cotto will win to big to strong & Pac is overrated!! People Pac for the last 10 yrs only fights Champions, ex champions & elite fighters. Name another fighter that does that for 10 straight years? THAT IS TOP NOTCH COMPETITION!! Pac is only 1 person and the best of the best have to get in line!! PAC DUCKS NOBODY!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:05 PM
Well said, balanced article. Great overall. We need this kind of article online, clear facts.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:06 PM
100% I agree manny is great and no one can do the same what he did…
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:07 PM
Absolutely on target! Things could have been different if Pacquiao is an American. Imagine what Dundee’s stand would be if that’s the case. The irony of it all, a lot of so called boxing experts, considers Dundee a boxing guru. What a shame.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:15 PM
Oliver, outstanding editorial of Manny Pacquaio, we will soon find out, what the skeptics are going to say next. They cannot fathom, how great of a fighter Manny Pacquaio is. As yuou have read many articles leading to the fight, you do not hear Pacquaio bragging about his greatness. It will be a good fight, and the PACMAN will prevail. He just have too much speed for Cotto to handle. Once againm thank you for the article.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:17 PM
Finally!!! A writer has paid Pac his dues!!!
I was one of the few boxing fan who believed that Pac can achieve all these Greatness. I first saw Pac with the Barrera fight & instantly impressed. I researched all about him after that & I was convinced I’m seeing one All time Great after I compare his fight footage compared to Modern ATGs like SRL, Duran etc… & all ATGs that I saw during my Lifetime.
I was once ridiculed when I Predicted as far back as 2007 at eastsideboxing.com that Pac will beat JMM,Hatton, DLH, Cotto & PBF. I was currently banned at that website for unknown reason but you can search & read some of my predictions there. Here’s one: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69388
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:18 PM
very well said sir and a balance one.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:18 PM
Its kinda like the Fight Night 4 game. In the Diaz fight 30% picked Pac to win. Result KO 9th round. Dela Hoya fight 40% picked Pac to win. Result TKO 8th round. Hatton fight 50% picked Pac to win. Result KO 2nd round. Now the present 60% pick Pac to win. You see as in the game the fighter that gets better more people start to believe he is actually improving, deadly with both hands, speed increased, power increased, defense better. Can you say the same with Cotto? Who did Cotto fight 1 champion & 1 contender & 1 bum. Who did Pac fight 2 champions & 1 Hall of Famer!!!! Who is really overrated then by these stats. Forget the very past its the current 2 yrs of the fighters that count. Post Margarito is the past and post Diaz is the past. Both fighters are not the same after those fights. Clearly one is going up and the other is going down!! Unless your blind unbias experts can see this just ask Beristain one of the current Top Trainers. PLEASE DONT ASK SANTIAGO WHO THE HELL IS HE A NOBODY TRAINER!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:20 PM
Great article. Love and Respect right here..
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:22 PM
Finally, an HONEST assessement of Manny’s amazing career!
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:27 PM
Nice article. You hit the ball.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:54 PM
Truly pacman is an all time great, still discrimination prevail in this country, it seems they can not accept a brown race to be on top of the boxing world, like Dundee, until know he doesnt want to eat all he said in the pacmans previous fights where all his prediction went the other way. GOd bless Pacquiao, God bless the Philippines
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:54 PM
Great article. it’s good to point out that despite the put down by some boxing critics, pacquiao is still not done cementing his legendary career. There’s so many exciting boxer to watch like tyson, ali, sugar ray but nothing compare to manny coz he fight to make the fans happy. also show the class of a champion, always respecting his opponent before and after fighting them.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:01 PM
Nice article. Thank you for shutting up the boxing experts(or so they say) who always get their analysis proven wrong by MP. Then they would think of an excuse how their prediction didn’t happen. I wonder what their excuse will be after MP shock them once again by beating Cotto.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:03 PM
Manny truelly deserves to be in ATG. Boxing is SOOOOOO Alive again and he is one of the primary reasons…Honestly
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:06 PM
That’s right, Oscar knew the big money fight against Pacquiao won’t be taking place at 154 (at the time, it was a fight that the world wanted to see because it was unimaginable that a former flyweight could challenge Oscar). So Oscar willingly went down to 147 to make the fight happen.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:19 PM
Well Said!! good article!
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:22 PM
Agreed 1000%.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:24 PM
I like your piece, those critics and one dimensional writer will shut their mouth up.I was never a boxing fan before,i got to know “PACMAN” the first time i heard his name from Mr. Michael Buffer it sound like “Many Fuck-U”…while im working in a Bar. Most Ladies like it…he is truly an all time Great…box in bed.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:30 PM
People are hard to pleased yet they cannot put their own neck on the line! Once Cotto is defeated, he will be the same like Hatton, an overhyped fighter or a drained fighter like ODLH.
Thanks for the article.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:31 PM
Pacquiao’s later fights were orchestrated by Arum. Arum made sure he fought for money and that’s why he appeared to have avoided Guzman and the likes in super feather. Before Arum, Pacquiao was lining up opponents as fast as they came. He even traveled to no man’s land in Thailand just to challenge for the crown and knocked out their champ.. Marquez avoided Pacquiao for almost 4 years before he awoke to the realisation that his life is being wasted by loses to unknowns like Chris John. My take is that Pacquiao is hated not because of lack of accomplishments but because of his rabid fans. His fans are forum busters thata disrrupts any website with non-sense and unintelligent arguments. Can anyone name just one reason why Pacquiao should be hated? none, except for his crazy fans. Pacquiao haters want to see Pacquiao defeated to shut his fans up.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:35 PM
Pacman was even criticized of avoiding black boxers. Lately even going to the extreme of accusing him of steroid use by the Mayweathers themselves.
They said it very well, “People bring you down when you’re on top.” Well, guess what?? Floyd is not on top right (Ring, Yahoo) and that’s what he’s doing.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:39 PM
Good read! Great writing Mr. Suarez. Pac-man deserves all the credits. Like you mention on your writing people always come up with ridiculous excuses. Some Americans do recognized Pac-man’s achievements as among the greatest and some ridicules it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:44 PM
from the dressing room, when he came out for that challenger’s walk to the ring, that is when hbo began to fall in love with him. this was of course for the ledwaba championship fight at 122 lbs.
one of the announcers then said, “he’s acting more like a (darn!) politician” because the joy of the moment could not be denied in pacquiao’s eyes/face even as he seemed to acknowledge each and every greeter in the crowd on his way to the ring.
after the fight, one of the hbo announcers categorically stated, “i want to see him (fight) again!”
and so, ever since the ledwaba fight, pacquiao had hbo for most of that great great climb, up, up, up and higher-on to more challenging weights and entertaining fights.
salamat manny/freddie, thanks hbo!
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:58 PM
Surely this writer has peace within himself. His article is well researched, supported by facts, impartial, true, no hypes, just the facts. It’s very much worth reading. More power to you.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:58 PM
Clear and nice analysis dude… Keep up the good work!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:05 PM
Great article. Even if Pacquiao loses to Cotto, he must be commended for being up to the challenge.
PS- What is it with Boxing articles and horrible spelling errors?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:09 PM
Well Said. There are many critics that don’t even know how to appreciate.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 PM
I agree with your article. Pacquiao is indeed an all time boxing great and if he continues to defeat opponents of great caliber, he would undoubtedly become the greatest boxer of all time.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 PM
yea baby u got it right. those haters are just sore losers. cant take the greatness of the pinoy fighter. win or lose we still root for pacman because he brings joy to the household when he fights. he’s just very entertaining and he really brings it on rain or shine. it don’t matter because he always comes prepared for anything. he prepares MORE than he makes EXCUSESSSS. that’s the rule of the game brotha.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 PM
I totally agree with everything you said…..
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:44 PM
I agree.those critics are only jealous.no boxer can duplicate that achivement of pacman.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:55 PM
Great article… very factual! The man Manny is a beast, to the hardcore boxing fans and new comers just see the fight and u will understand what Oliver is talking about.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:09 PM
Allelujah!!!!
A very good piece of writing….
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:11 PM
Best article!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:14 PM
Nuff said…
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:14 PM
very well said..
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:21 PM
Amen…
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:22 PM
awesome!!!! well said…whenever he wins a fight with bigger guys, they always have to find reason to discredit his victory…it doesnt matter because the writers who acknowledge his wins are far valid than those against it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:29 PM
But he’s Asian! If he was American, no doubt he already is in the all-time greats. Asians are physically small people who stand no chance in sports like boxing. And the American media cannot and will never acknowledge that their belief in that fact has been broken. The American media has the biggest influence in telling who and who do not belong in the All-Time Greats. Just ask Wyatt Earp who was able to make a legend of himself by making up his own stories.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 PM
nice article, very objective.. congrats man you got it right. I just can’t believe that until now some people still don’t appreciate pacman’s accomplishment in the ring, as if there’s really no prestige in the sport of pro boxing.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:42 PM
Oliver this is very good article . It is a very equal and professional . I hope I could read more article like this . In addition , I would like to emphasize also the humbleness of Pacquiao. He alsways respect his opponents and releases some of thoughts in an ethical manner that some of the boxers do not have . Discipline in training , that’s his tool to success / victory . I think he’s one of the hardest and dedicated boxer that really focus much during the training & it’s unbelievable to achieved such level …. and you can consider it as an ” All- time Great ” . And for this incoming fight … I would say Pacquiao will win either from KO or decision! More Power to you Oliver !
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:46 PM
Wow..very nice article!
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:58 PM
The only reply needed in this article is that Pacquiao is a Filipino not an American.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:01 PM
well all has done by it’s own time.it may not be fit for there taste not because they dont like manny, but because manny take all the odds nad beat all the best and great boxers of his time.those critics which was trying to impose by those people who does not like manny, all i can say just eat all your shit..manny, is one of the best and great boxers of all time…about oscar, he is still in his prime it is just simple that he cant carry the bullet firing off manny, to him..hatton, in the other hand was very confident that he can take the fist of manny, but sad to say he was not ready to eat all of those..let’s wait for the nov. 14 so you will find who’s the best..
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:01 PM
WELL SAID MR SUAREZ!!
BOTTOM LINE, SOME CRITICS ARE SUBJECTIVE. PAID BOBOS. HA HA HA ..LOL.. ITS THE PACMANS TIME. NOBODY CAN ARGUE WITH THAT. WHETHER THEY ARE GOING TO LIKE IT NOT… THE FILIPINO BOXER MANNY PAQUIAO WILL BE IN THE HISTORY BOOKS. SHOULD AND SHALL BE A HALL OF FAMER TOO. PERIOD. THANKS BUDDY.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:10 PM
sometimes it’s something to do with the race some people can’t accept that an asian boxer is the king at the moment. If Pacquiao is an American maybe right now his popularity might have soared to heaven and everybody in the world would agree that he is the all time great.Ilive in Europe and although most Europeans are tolerant with other races.there are really some haters that are prejudiced to those who are not born in EU.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:15 PM
Crystal clear article but definitely a no no to anti pac. Those accomplishments does pay the bills but those things keeps on coming too; so Pacquiao has to take this opportunity and wisen up to become the first Asian professional boxer to retire financially secured and continously progressive, just fair enough for his sacrifices.History will be kind to him because he is carrying an inspiration for everybody in the positive lights.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 PM
Exactly all true!!!!
PACMAN IS AN ALL TIME GREAT….
GAYWEATHER IS AN ALL TIME FRAUD!
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:23 PM
When I came here in America, I quickly realized that you are okay as long as you have less than what they have. Jealousy and prejudice here in America still exist. We just do our best and believe in ourselves and keep on going. Mabuhay.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:24 PM
With all the achivements Pacquiao have done.. I believe he is the best boxer of all time..
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:44 PM
well written…this is giving credit where credit is due…
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:55 PM
Thanks oliver. Nice article. Let us all accept the fact that pacquiao is or one of the all time greats.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:00 PM
Oliver Suarez,
We all know that if only MP is either Black or White he is much more famous in the US,I think to be fair with MP no other boxer accomplish this except H Armstrong on my point of view the latinos and North America they don’t want to accept MP who came from Asia dominated their game at it’s best,It will go down the book one of the best Asian Best boxer ever produce in the entire world and I all respect all the sport analyst what they commented but i will tell you one more i saw MP rise from fame and fortune he is one of a kind he is Fearless, True warrior and a Gentleman, Thank you and more power
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Wow!, that was a one hell of a good elaboration sir!!! I salute you!
Let’s spread this to the boxing world.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Thats the fact dude. Paquiao is a very rare talent which must be given right accolades and appreciation from any boxing fan. Hope my next generation would still witness a warrior like him.

Regardless of the outcome of his forthcoming fight against Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico on November 14, 2009 in Las Vegas, USA, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s place in boxing history as one of the all-time greats has been established.
My new book title “Manny Pacquiao - The Greatest Fighter of All Time” tries to bring in fodder to the debate of who is the greatest boxer of all time, and presents both qualitative and quantitative sides to that debate. It applies three major criteria, namely: (1) The List, valued at 30 percent; (2) The Belt, 50 percent; and (3) The Win, 20 percent.
The List defers to the analysis and opinion that went into three of boxing’s most respected chroniclers—namely: The Ring Magazine, Associated Press and ESPN. But since these lists have been published years ago, The List also makes use of Ring Magazine’s Annual Pound-For-Pound list, which was published for the first time in 1989.
The Belt puts premium on the titles won by a boxer in several weight divisions. The more championships a boxer gets to win in different weight classes, the higher his rating goes. Bonus points need to be added, though—boxing supposedly being the model of fairness in sports—to those who (1) were active when there were less divisions, and (2) won their first championships at the higher levels (say, welterweight).
The Win presents stories behind The Belt. It uses three sub-criteria, namely, Winning Percentages, KO percentage, and Quality of Opposition. In sum, The Belt and The Win further sieve the rankings of the world’s greatest boxers of all time, according to The List.
In the elite company of boxing legends, The Pacman has risen to become THE GREATEST BOXER OF ALL TIME, pound for pound. Boxing experts say that his feat—starting a professional fighting career at 106 pounds and winning belts at up to 140 pounds—is simply not done. Beating Oscar De La Hoya at 147 pounds, another great champion, left little space for people to dispute his rise to the exalted pinnacle of world professional boxing.
Who is this man? Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao was born 30 years ago to a poor family in Budkidnon, Philippines. There was a time when he almost had nothing except the will to overcome adversity. But what character he’s got. Dedication. Hard work. Heart. Courage. Faith. These traits are bigger than boxing. They describe who he is. He could have been equally successful even if he had a job other than boxing.
This book is his story.

Oliver, I couldn’t have said it better! bulls eye against pac critics!
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:14 PM
well said and done mr. suarez! you nailed this one
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:22 PM
You got it right man! there’s no doubt the pacman is an all-time great. not to mention his being the only fighter who have 4 lineal world champion(flyweight(sasakul), featherweight(barrera),lightweight(marquez) & light-welterweight(hatton) and a two time fighter of the year and a strong candidate for this year also. he is no doubt one of the top 3 or top 5 greats of all time.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:27 PM
pacquiao is an all time great…period..u can criticize him and underrate him but u cannot change the established fact that he is an all time great..so enjoy his fights while he has not retired, a fighter like him comes one in a generation or not anymore…
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:36 PM
ur right oliver lets face the reality that pacman is an all time great and a kind of fighter that only comes once in a lifetime so lets give him all the credit pacman is the man!
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:46 PM
to all critics of pacman let this be put all thier minds of hallucination to sleep, why coz pacman is an oriental person a one in asia and he is an all time great and mostly american people can not accept what they done in boxing history
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:47 PM
wow, i am very great i read this article. this is the first time i read an article which is meaningful. no doubt, you will be one of the greatest article writer in this world.. keep it up man. i really like the way you expalin the facts..
i am 100% agree with you… where are the critics when other fighters fight in a catchweight.
this will simply because americans can’t accept that a small filipino will dominate in every division he will be in…
The truth really hurts if you are a lying… we must accept the fact that “MANNY IS A ONE DIMENTIONAL FIGHTER”
THANKS FOR THE ARTICLE..I WILL RECOMMEND THIS TO MY FRIENDS…. KEEP IT UP MAN…
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:52 PM
Amen.I agree with your argument that Manny possesses the traits, qualities and achievement in the boxing world that qualifies him to be one of the ‘All time great”. His kind comes once in a lifetime indeed. Great article.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:52 PM
There is no other road but the road to ALL TIME GREATNESS for Manny PAcquiao
Great article
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:01 PM
Manny is somebody who does not settle for “title defense” instead he pushes himself to the limit. Almost always he is the challenger rather than the challenged champion. In this life no matter how good a person is there would be always criticisms and skeptics. But those are opportunities to Prove them wrong and make them “eat their words”.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:02 PM
well said. unfortunately, even before the first punch manny will throw for the fight, his critics and detractors are already giving out reasons why cotto would lose, saying he has overtrained, that he is not the same fighter after the loss to margarito, that he was weight drained, etc., but never giving manny and freddie roach their due credit. coach freddie said it rightly, that’s its not size nor power but skills that win fights. to attribute victory by giving more weight to some other factor/s would be unfair to both cotto and pacquiao who have given this fight their darnedest preparation.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:08 PM
Agree… There are just people who still don’t believe that the pacman is a living legend….
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:08 PM
nice article..there are still boxers(loudmouths), scribes, trainors, boxing followers that are not ready yet for a FILIPINO to be acclaimed as a great boxer these days; its more of a racial thing i suppose. But they to accept tha facts before them that this FILIPINO is one of the greats in this generation of Boxers!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:10 PM
KUDOS!
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:11 PM
This is a great article, it’s not so biased, it is all based on time and day. Hey! Mr. Suarez I admired you from this moment on, you said ALL what I am supposed to say to those critics around the world and to those who belittle my idol (Pacquiao)in boxing. You know man he is truly a great champion. Hey! by the way can i know your email address, I have so much to say.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:12 PM
nice blog bro.. can i post this on my notes in fb? of course with your name printed on it.. there is only one word that describe the whites and blacks denial of pacquiao’s greatness… “discrimination” if he was an american would you think they will critisize him? i dont think wo..
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:39 PM
You are definitely right!!!
Thank you.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 PM
That is so true these critics are merely jealous of what has the pacman has accomplished don’t forget some of these guys are hardcore haters of our main boy pacquiao
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:59 PM
He didn’t fight Edwin Valero.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:01 PM
blood its pacmans tyme…giv d man his due, he paid lyfes harsh unforgving cndition, to qoute the ancients…giv what is for caesars and reward wat is for the just n righteous.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:19 PM
so true oliver..so true..
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:20 PM
Nice article!! I agree with you.. People critiziced Manny for his achievements but they don’t consider that no boxer has ever than that like he did…. Manny fought so many battles from flyweight to welterweight divisions and name those names of his victims like Libwada, Barrera, Marquez, Morales, Hatton and Dela Hoya. That is a great feat that no boxer has ever did in their career!! Manny will faced Cotto on Nov.14 for welterweight division. If he wins, critics will again said Cotto is damaged goods? Perhaps that is there excused again??!! Comm’on lets faced it, Manny is truly an all time great!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:39 PM
I beleive in what you wrote man. It’s hard to duplicate what he had accomlished so we should commend it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:45 PM
YES!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:47 PM
You’ve got it right Bro! Hit from the bulls eye. Keep it up.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:52 PM
dats right!, very good article. pacman has lot of credentials to mention to be the “ALL TIME GREAT” when he hangs up his gloves. More wins to come from elite boxers now like cotto, floyd & julio cezar jr at catchweight will make him a “TOP BOXER OF ALL TIME”.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:59 PM
Cotto Fans, criticize now and not after the fight. During the fight against ODLH, many people says that it was a mismatch in favor of ODLH because of the weight and experiences. But after the fight, they said ODLH was already past his prime. Question: If that is the case, why did you bet for ODLH if you knew that he is already past his prime? To learn the things you wanted to know is to let it happen then realize what is wrong. Now, ODLH fans and losers learned what is wrong with then betting to a wrong person in the fight.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:04 PM
this is true!
americans are biased!!!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:10 PM
Failed to mention one thing though. . ,
Pacquiao in his stature now, has opted to remain humble and soft-spoken, notwithstanding his accomplishments in the boxing sport.
“God first”, he quipped during one of his post-fight interviews (Hatton fight).
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:24 PM
WHATEVER PACHATERS THINK ABOUT THE FILIPINO HERO, HE STILL THE BEST OF ALL! REALITY HURTS! BUT HE CAME FROM A POOR PHILIPPINES, OK? BUT TRY TO FIGURE OUT, ALL HIS ACHIEVEMENTS CAME FROM HIS HARDWORK, BLOOD SWEAT& TEARS, AND WITH THE LOVE OF GOD AND HIS RESPECT TO PEOPLE AROUND HIM, HE MANAGED TO CONQUER ALL SO FAR, AND STILL GOING STRONGER THAN EVER.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:25 PM
Very well said!!! just as what I’m trying to tell to these dumbnuts online about the catchweight issue. That this is Manny’s 1st time to a catchwieght.
Great job!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 PM
The sad reality is that PacMan is not an American nor British nor even Mexican… But despite so, he is now No. 1 lb4lb. That makes it more incredible. Double effort for past lb4lb fighters given their nationality. PacMan transcended what many have done. If he is an American, how sweeter it could have been. Scribes and write ups will be all praises for him. -double up.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Yes, I really agree that manny pacquiao is the all time great. He beat all the odds in his boxing career. And on this coming November 14′ 09 he will become the only boxer in history who have won world titles in seven(7) different weight classes. Once again this will add to his long list of accomplishments. And to all those critics, they were only envy of pacquiao. They were only making excuses of their fallen speculations about pacquiao. And I felt sorry for them…GO PACMAN!
November 4th, 2009 at 12:04 AM
very nice article, you are a true writer, simple but so many points, very very nice
November 4th, 2009 at 12:26 AM
1st!!
November 4th, 2009 at 12:29 AM
Wow, hat’s off to you Mr. Suarez what a nice and beautiful article about all the boxers especially Manny Pacquiao who always receive criticism whe they/he achieved great accomplishment in the ring. Now, it’s very clear to all critics. Thank you very much for this great article. GOD bless you always..
November 4th, 2009 at 12:30 AM
NICE ARTCLE!
November 4th, 2009 at 12:45 AM
Word.
November 4th, 2009 at 12:50 AM
you are right dude. you logically put the proper perspective to rightfully judge manny pacquiao’s achievement. as a result, he is logically an all time great. now the moron pacquiao critics will just have to shut their foul mouths and partial judgments.
November 4th, 2009 at 1:21 AM
Nice article…pacman skip bantamweight not because he was avoiding rafael marquez and tim austin, it was because he was gaining weight. his bout with singsurat resulted to his 2nd ko due to his dehydration. he was so heavy to defend his title, thus he had to shed off his excess pounds within the day of the fight…when the opportunity presented itself to fight for the ledwaba’s belt, plus his body frame was getting bigger, he skippped bantamweight…
November 4th, 2009 at 1:26 AM
TO THE FULLEST Extent of the context of the write up, I AGREE!
November 4th, 2009 at 1:56 AM
u hit it..nice column..go pacman go!!!!!!!!!
November 4th, 2009 at 2:11 AM
i agree with you.. manny pacquiao is the best.. all those who criticize him dont know about boxing.. they are all losers..
November 4th, 2009 at 2:16 AM
What more can I say? You have hit all the birds with one stone!
November 4th, 2009 at 3:22 AM
Nice read!
Kudos to the author.
All questions for criticism were answered by the author with factual evidence.
November 4th, 2009 at 3:33 AM
nice article…thanks for appreciating paquiao’s accomplishments..not just i’m a filipino but as a boxing fan, PACMAN is truly amazing in and out the ring..truly a sports treasure..a gentleman of boxing but a 100% warrior by heart.
November 4th, 2009 at 3:34 AM
approve
November 4th, 2009 at 3:40 AM
i agree! in fact Pacquiao is now considered as one of the greatest ever especially when he beats cotto! Wise people put him at top 5!
November 4th, 2009 at 3:55 AM
This is the best article I have read! Plain honest and sincere. I hope those that are pro and against the Pacman learns from this article. Let the Pacman get his due credit!
Keep it up!!!
November 4th, 2009 at 4:43 AM
Absolutely correct! Very well said
November 4th, 2009 at 4:46 AM
I think the article is well said. Though there will always be critics whatever one will do. But before long most will acknowledge that Pacquiao fought the best boxers in any wieght category he was in. I just hope that some writer will mention Pacquiao’s foe’s rank in the boxing standings during the time they fought so those critics mouth will shut up. Forever I hope.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:12 AM
nice read. keep it up! PACQUIAO all the way!
November 4th, 2009 at 9:39 AM
hello, your right what u said goo idea fantastic i want to say that manny is the best offall time co/he is a new generation.they knock all on his prime may anting yan kaya walang talo yan cotto”bagsak yan sa 2 nd round like hatton good luck na lang my idol, god bless u always, keep it up manny.
November 4th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
I agree with your thoughts.Mabuhay ka!
November 4th, 2009 at 10:58 AM
I love how he’s the “catchweight king”. How many fights have been at catchweight with him? Oh that’s right - ONE.
DLH fought him at the WW limit of 147 at Oscar’s request.
November 4th, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Nice article.
The Undisputed Pay-per-pound king is NOT WORTHY to face The Pacqman.
Boxing history will laugh at Floyd “The Duck” Mayweather, Jr., the money-faced man who ducked great fighters of his division… his descendants shall be so ashamed of him that they will change their surname. What a pathetic athlete this Floyd.
Pacquiao an all-time great?
History will tell in the future.
November 4th, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Well done just stated on the fact, nice read.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:17 PM
yeah you’re right! however, comes the 14th of this month, he will be dealt with the worst beating he can get in his entire boxing career in the hands of miguel cotto! maybe he can fight marquez for a trilogy and retire whatever is the result of such fight!
November 4th, 2009 at 9:41 PM
very well said.. it’s as if the writer read what was on my mind the whole time about the critics they thrown to manny.. how manny proved them wrong and surpassed their expectations. for me it’s mile stone.. instead of thanking manny for what he had done to the boxing world, people are still trying to pull him down.. he’s one of a kind.. a real raw talent and molded into one great fighter.. it’s all about work ethic and discipline. he inspires me with that.. my hats off to him.. he’s the man.. good luck to cotto and manny, may the best man win.. i expect an explosive fight come nov. 14th!!!
November 6th, 2009 at 1:40 AM
What I have noticed on the way Manny has been fighting was that: he’s been getting better and better. His speed and strong hard punches obviously devastated his opponents. Coto has the strenght but not as fast as Manny. Kungfu fighters focus on speed, which they have the advantage over individuals which are slower;….and Manny has both, speed and power behind his punches.
November 7th, 2009 at 5:47 AM
Manny will remain in the hearts of boxing fans coz of his jokes and his down to earth attitude. He just love to excite the fans, like Efren Bata Reyes. The space here is not enough to compliment Manny’s contribution in Boxing.Win or lose. But good luck man!!
November 7th, 2009 at 8:13 PM
pacquiao is the best…. he does not need to fight cotto in the first place.. to show to the world that he’s not scared of challenges…
November 15th, 2009 at 1:05 AM
Now, what are you saying now that Manny won and kick Cotto’s ass?
December 7th, 2009 at 6:58 PM
